Sunday, June 26: Bring your family, friends and neighbors — we’re opening our doors for FREE. Community day is our way of saying thanks to our guests, who bring our building to life every day! And it’s a chance for folks who are unfamiliar with The Tech to explore our hands-on exhibits and experiences for free. We’ll also have $5 tickets to films in the Hackworth IMAX Dome Theater plus special activities and goodies. Stay tuned for details!

Saturday, May 7: Come make stuff at The Tech! This event is for girls — along with their siblings and parents! — to come be inspired by projects made by other young people. Technology and engineering will come together for maker activities like laser-cutting with TechShop San Jose, stop-motion animation with VidCode, imagining a habitat for Mars with Okada Design and making video games with Girls Make Games. Girls Day offerings are drop-in and free with admission!


Wednesday, May 11: What would society gain from having more women and minorities in tech, and how do we get there? Watch the documentary “CODE: Debugging the Gender Gap” and hear a panel discussion — moderated by Gretchen Walker, The Tech’s Vice President of Education — on a topic that’s central to Silicon Valley’s future. Wednesday, May 11, 5:30 p.m. at Microsoft in Mountain View. $20.

Come showcase your country of descent at International Fair (IF) 2016, at Country Lane. Our school is a rainbow of cultures, with students and parents, hailing from far corners of the earth, who now call Country Lane, home. IF 2016 gives the school community a chance to celebrate its cultural diversity, while reminding the kids that within diversity lies unity. Please participate at IF 2016 by:

(1) Creating a country booth

(2) Performing in a 3-5 min cultural show

(3) Participating in a fashion show

Just come by and enjoy an evening of food, fun, fashion and culture, in Country Lane.  Everyone (kids and parents) is encouraged to wear traditional costume. Help Fight Cystic Fibrosis

Cystic fibrosis is a life-threatening, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and progressively limits the ability to breathe or break down food and absorb vital nutrients.

5^th Grader, Megan Grainger, has been living with this disease throughout her 6 years at Country Lane, needing to take medication before she eats any food in order to help her digest properly.  In her honor, our Cornerstone kids have organized a donation drive to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in order to help fight this disease.

Great Strides is the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s largest national fundraising event.  Each year, more than 125,000 people participate in hundreds of walks across the country to support the Foundation’s mission to cure cystic fibrosis. The funds raised from Great Strides helps provide people with CF the opportunity to lead full, productive lives by funding research and drug development, promoting individualized treatment and ensuring access to high-quality, specialized care.

The local Great Strides 5k walk to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation will be held on Sunday, May 22, 2016 in Guadalupe Park in San Jose.  Several of Megan's family members will be walking in her name, raising money for the foundation.  Their team name is "Walking for Megan."  They have raised $45 so far and their goal is $1,500.  The website is:

S.F. Exploratorium to Live Stream Tonight's Total Solar Eclipse

Once every every 18 years and 11 days, someone, somewhere in the world, can have a front-row seat to a total solar eclipse. Today, if you live in, say, Australia or South China, you can count yourself among the lucky ones. But for we San Franciscans, our own Exploratorium will be live streaming the whole celestial event.

The Embarcadero museum has sent a production team on an extra-special expedition toWoleai—a coral atoll, about the size of Golden Gate Park, about 500 miles north of New Guinea in the South Pacific region known as Micronesia—to document the sun's close encounter with the moon.

Today, beginning at 4pm PST, space nerds can get as close to the action as most people ever will at a free live program at the Exploratorium:

Exploratorium scientists and educators, both in Micronesia and at the museum, will fill you in on what makes an eclipse and how to view one safely, and they’ll introduce you to the culture and geography of Micronesia. The program will explore the science of the sun, using amazing, high-definition images and video from NASA satellites, and will highlight NASA’s new MMS mission, a multi-satellite endeavor to measure the magnetosphere that connects the Earth and the sun.

If you can't make it over to the Embarcadero, take advantage of 21st Century convenience and watch the whole thing from the comfort of your bed or office thanks to a webcast from the Exploratorium, which has been bringing eclipses to a wider audience via live broadcasts since 1998.

Either way, you won't want to miss it—if this NASA astrophysicist (speaking to The New York Times) isn't exaggerating, it should be pretty epic:

"The cool thing for those who are going to be in the path of totality is that they are going to be able to see the outer atmosphere of the sun called the corona,” said C. Alex Young, a solar astrophysicist from NASA. "The corona will look like flames streaming from behind the moon. This is only visible from the ground during a total solar eclipse,” he said.

In this one instance, you can forget what your parents told you about staring into the sun and go for it.

MONDAY
*wear your 5th grade t-shirt
*bring a bag lunch (put in your backpack) completely disposable!
*arrive at school between 6:50-7 a.m.
*luggage/baggage should be labeled and placed near the bus loop in front of the school (Look for areas posted with name of teacher.) Please Label EVERYTHING!
*If you have any medications, please place in a zip-lock bag, write name on bag, place yellow medication form inside. PLEASE hand to your CHILD'S teacher.
(Reminder: inhalers will stay in child's back pack. DO NOT SEND medications like Tylenol, Benedryl, Neosporin, etc, which are available at camp. Your consent was already given on the registration form for over the counter medications. (PLEASE no vitamins).

*Say GOODBYE TO YOUR CHILD at the CLASSROOM DOOR (lots of hugs)- this can be difficult for some parents, but we do ask that you leave the campus so that luggage can be loaded and students can be safely accounted for and board the bus. NO parents will be allowed on the buses.

*Students will check in with their teachers, collect their journal , and be seated. Each teacher will then lead their classroom to the bus by 7:15 a.m.

*The bus will leave PROMPTLY at 7:30 a.m. (DON'T be LATE!)

*We will be leaving Science Camp by 12 noon.

5^th Grade Science Camp:  5^th Graders will be at Science Camp February 8-12.  They will then have the Presidents Week break February 15-19  when no school is in session to recover from their adventures!

After-school enrichment classes begin on February 2.  Class offerings include: Piano (MusIQ), Academic Chess, Bricks 4 Kidz, Martial Arts, Young Rembrandts (drawing), and Clap Arts Dance.  There is still time to sign up.  Check out the class options and links to sign up at www.countrylaneschool.org

 3-5^th grade students can participate in the Future Chefs culinary competition! Fill out an entry form with your favorite healthy breakfast recipe and you’ll be in the running to compete in a live competition at Moreland Community Center on February 24.  Check in the cafeteria or ask your teacher for entry forms and more details.   Remember … the deadline for recipe’s to be turned in is Wednesday February 3 !!!!

Making Wishes Come True.....

(CNN)Support continues to pour in for one little girl with a simple Christmas wish.

Eight-year-old Sa'fyre Terry of Schenectady, New York, lost her family two years ago in a fire police say was intentionally set. She survived with severe burns to her face, and lost her right hand and foot as a result of her injuries.

What she really wanted this holiday season is Christmas cards from around the world, a family friend said in a recent Facebook post. This all started when her aunt, Liz Dolder, bought her a Christmas tree on which to hang cards. Sa'fyre decided she wanted to fill the tree with as many cards as she could get.

Tech Activity

Saturday, Jan. 23: In a galaxy not so far, far away… is a Star Wars edition of Tucked In @ The Tech! In this special family sleepover, you’ll watch “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” in the Hackworth IMAX Dome Theater, receive collectible Star Wars swag, build edible TIE fighters, and harness your problem-solving force to help ewoks escape storm troopers. Required Clothing and Equipment

This list is for all Hiking participants.  While going through the list, keep in mind the number of days you will be at our campus.  Check off item once it’s packed.  Great places to find these items:  REI, Any Mountain, The Sports Basement (on Stevens Creek),  Sports Authority, The Mountain View Army Supply (on Bascom). 

PLEASE LABEL EVERY SINGLE ITEM WITH YOUR CHILD’S NAME ON IT!

WATERPROOF EVERYTHING!

Required for Hiking Day

__        Lunch from home on the first day only.

__        Day pack – large enough for lunch, jacket, rain gear, journal and water bottle

__        Water Bottle – unbreakable, leak-proof one quart (or more) plastic bottle without a straw -  Drinking water bottles (e.g. Calistoga, Evian, etc) are fine.

__        Rain gear – complete rain jacket and pants (coated nylon is best)

__        Sunscreen – SPF 30 or higher

__        Lip balm with SPF (avoid “Chapstick” brand)

__        Hats – (1) for sun protection, (1) for warmth

__        Gloves

__        Foot gear – sturdy, ankle supporting and waterproofed for hiking.  Break in at least one month prior to your trip and make sure students have practiced tying them.

__        Jacket – stuffable nylon or thick fleece is a good choice

__        Inhaler if you need it while hiking

__        Emergency “I have to go the bathroom out in the wilderness” Kit: (2) Gallon-sized Ziplock baggies, (4-5) One quart baggies, handsanitizer, travel-sized bathroom wipes, travel-sized tissue

__        (Pencil and journal to be provided by your teacher)

__        Bandana scarf (lunch placemat on our daily hikes)

Required for Overnight (after 4 p.m.)

__        Foot gear – in addition to the hiking pair, bring a pair of rubber-soled tennis shoes to wear on campus

__        Warm sleeping bag and pillow (sheet and thick blankets are fine) – pack in a large garbage bag –practice                       rolling it up!

__        Long pants – bring at least (3) extra pair

__        Shirts – (4-5) are needed, long sleeve are best to accommodate the changes in weather.

__        Warm layers- (2-3) sweat shirts (in case of rain)

__        Socks and underwear – one pair per day plus one extra (a few thick hiking socks if possible)

__        Pajamas or equivalent (sweats, etc.)

__        Toiletries – comb or brush, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, etc. (travel bottles best – label w/name)

__        Bath towel and washcloth

__        Sandals to wear in the shower

__        Personal medications, as needed (please fill out the medication form provided, place in a Ziplock baggie with your child’s name labeled clearly – give to child’s teacher the morning of departure)

__        (2 -3) extra large plastic garbage bags – 1 for sitting on in case of rain, 1 for repacking sleeping bag and pillow/dirty clothes

__        Rolling suitcase suggested– students will need to carry all of their own gear

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Thank you, thank you, thank you!  We have had a whirlwind month here at the Country Lane Homestead!  With  the amazing Wild West Walk A Thon, the Spooktacular Halloween Carnival at  the MEF Pumpkin Patch, the Charleston Wrap fundraiser, a couple of family dinner nights out, Kona Ice and Yogurtland sprinkled in, I am sure everyone is ready to put  up their feet this week and just sit back  and  relax.  Thank you again to all of you who donated your time and money to make every event here at Country Lane a success!  Our village is strong because we work as one to get things done!

Monday evening our 3^rd graders dazzled their families with some toe-tapping tunes and a jig as they sang their way through various genres of music.  I was so impressed with our performers and am sure that we will see several of them in the future on American Idol, Just Dance and other reality shows that show off the stuff they are made of.

Thank you to everyone who walked to school on the International Walk to School Day.  We had 350 pairs of feet stomping the pavement making their way to school in a healthy effort to decrease traffic on the streets. Way to go walkers!  We appreciate you!

Wanted:  Donations for the Second Harvest Food Drive

More than 1 in 10 people in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties rely on food from Second Harvest Food Bank each month.  Nearly 40% of these are children. 

Please join us in supporting those in our community who do not have enough to eat.  Bring your non-perishable donation to the school office during our annual Second Harvest Food Drive October 28^th through November 18th.  You can make a difference for local families this holiday season!

Got Sick Kids?

We are experiencing a high volume of sick kids at school.  If your student is not feeling well, please check their symptoms before sending them to school.  95% of the time, if you send your student to school ill and tell them to go into the office if they are not feeling well, they do come to the office and are sent home, but have spent enough time at school to pass on their germs to their classmates.

We want to keep Country Lane a healthy place to be and we appreciate your cooperation.

Tardies

We have had a run on students arriving to school tardy.  Please make an effort to have your student(s) wake up at a reasonable time to prepare for the day and be on time to school.  Coming to school late is a bad habit and your student is missing important instructional time.  We want your student to be successful in life so please make the effort to get them to school on time.  If your student needs to be tardy because of an appointment, a note from the doctor/dentist is required upon their arrival. 

Traffic Safety Plea from the Superintendent

I am sure everyone in our district has noticed the increasing traffic in and around the Moreland School District.  Some of our neighboring districts and schools have experienced terrible traffic tragedies. Please help us keep all our children safe by following the traffic rules around the schools and slowing down!  We will be working with the City of San Jose's Project Passion Program and Walk and Roll 

Program to evaluate our traffic flow around the schools.  However, even with the best system in place, each driver is responsible for the speed of their vehicle and the observance of traffic safety around schools.  Help us to keep all our children safe.

Join Us For a Town Hall Meeting

The Moreland School District is hosting a Town Hall Meeting on Thursday, October 22, 2015 at 6:00PM in the Moreland Community Center MU Room (same parking lot as the District Office, 4711 Campbell Avenue).  If you have not had the opportunity to attend a meeting at your school site, join us as Superintendent Mary Kay Going gives a State of the District presentation.  In addition, as the District 

begins work on the renewal of the Strategic Plan, your feedback and insight is critical as we begin engagement for this process.  If you're unable to join us on October 22nd, we will be hosting the same presentation and opportunity on November 5, 2015 at 6:00PM in the same location.   Both opportunities will offer a chance for community members to write a letter to a future Moreland student, letting the District know about your hopes and dreams for our schools: http://bit.ly/LetterCampaign2015  Moreland is grateful to have such strong community support.  Join us in helping to shape our future.
